US President Donald Trump has jokingly asked his Republican members of Congress whether he could once again run for the presidency in 2028.
Addressing the members in Florida on Monday, Trump said he has raised enough funds that can even help contest the next polls.
“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100% sure,” he was quoted as saying by NBC News.
“I think I’m not allowed to run again," he said.
The American constitution does not allow a person to contest the Presidential polls more than twice.
The 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution says: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."
After scripting a massive victory in the US Presidential polls last year, Trump, who defeated Kamala Harris, returned to power for the second term.
His official inauguration took place on January 20.
Last week, Congressman Andy Ogles introduced a House Joint Resolution to amend the Constitution of the United States to allow a President to be elected for up to but no more than three terms.
I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms. This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs," said Congressman Ogles in a statement.
