Two US lawmakers have sent a letter to the CEOs of Apple and Alphabet asking them to be ready to remove the Chinese-owned app TikTok from the American app stores on January 19.
The letter was shot by leaders of the US House of Representatives’ committee on China- Republican Representative John Moolenaar and senior Democrat Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi.
A US federal appeals court last week upheld a law which required ByteDance to divest TikTok in the USA or face a ban.
The lawmakers also urged TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to sell the app.
“Congress has acted decisively to defend the national security of the United States and protect TikTok’s American users from the Chinese Communist Party,” the lawmakers wrote as quoted by CNN.
“We urge TikTok to immediately execute a qualified divestiture," they said.
The social media company recently lost its appeal against the law.
TikTok and ByteDance have now submitted a legal request to temporarily block the law to give the Supreme Court more time to consider the matter, reported BBC.
The Department of Justice had earlier called to dismiss the request.
