White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders confirmed the issue and said that Pompeo will visit the country for the ongoing and 'important work' of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

"To continue the ongoing and important work of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, Secretary Pompeo will be leaving for North Korea on July 5th to meet with the North Korean leader and his team," Sanders said during a media briefing on Monday.

US President Donald Trump on June 12 met North Korea leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

It was during this meet that the two leaders had issued commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The move appears to be a major breakthrough after months of barbs exchanged between North Korea and the US.

Fresh development in the relationship between North Korea, South Korea and the US began recently when a North Korea delegation was invited to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, which took place earlier this year.
